MICROSUCTION Vs SYRINGING

These are not equivalent, which is why the NHS has largely moved away from syringing. Microsuction uses gentle suction with the canal visible under a microscope. Syringing flushes water in under pressure, with the clinician unable to see during the flush.

The practical difference is who can be treated. Syringing is not recommended where there is a history of perforated eardrum, a current ear infection, grommets or previous ear surgery. Microsuction is generally suitable in all of those, which is the main reason we use it.

It also means no preparation. Syringing usually needs several days of drops first. You can book microsuction and simply come.

When to get YOUR EARS CHECKED IN SUTTON COLDFIELD

Most blocked ears are wax. A few are not, and that is the reason to have it looked at rather than treated blindly.

Book if you have muffled or reduced hearing, fullness or pressure, ringing, itching, earache, a cough set off by the ear, or a hearing aid that has started whistling.

Be seen sooner if the hearing loss came on suddenly, there is discharge or bleeding, the pain is significant, or you are genuinely dizzy. Sudden hearing loss is not something to wait on, and not all of the time critical causes are wax.

Some people simply produce more wax than others, and that is not something you have done wrong. Beyond that, the causes are mechanical: hearing aids and earbuds sit in the canal and stop wax from migrating out, cotton buds push it inwards faster than the ear clears it, and a narrow or bendy canal holds what a straighter one would shed.

    What NOT TO DO

Cotton buds push wax deeper and compact it against the eardrum, which turns a mild blockage into a firm plug. They are the most common reason a simple removal becomes a difficult one.

Ear candles do not work. No evidence they draw wax out, and clear evidence of burns and perforated eardrums.

Nothing rigid. Hairpins, keys and matchsticks account for a real share of the perforations seen in clinic.

Olive oil is harmless and unnecessary here. It helps before syringing. For microsuction, come as you are.
