Yellow fever is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes in parts of sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America. It is uncommon in travellers but serious, and there is no specific treatment, so prevention matters.
Unlike most travel vaccines, this one is also a border requirement. Many countries either require proof of vaccination for entry, or require it if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever occurs. That proof is the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis, and only a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre can issue it.
One piece of timing you cannot work around: the certificate becomes valid 10 days after vaccination. If you fly in eight days, the vaccine will still protect you, but the certificate will not be accepted at a border that requires it. So book as early as you can, and if you are already inside 10 days, call us, and we will tell you honestly what your options are.

Who should NOT HAVE THIS VACCINE
- Infants under 9 months of age.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding, unless the risk of infection is unavoidable.
- A weakened immune system, from illness or from medication including chemotherapy, high dose steroids or biologics.
- A thymus disorder, or previous thymus removal.
- A severe allergy to eggs or to any vaccine component.
- Age 60 or over receiving a first dose, where the risk of rare serious reactions is higher and the decision needs weighing carefully against the actual risk of your trip.
- HIV infection, depending on your immune status.

What is Yellow Fever Vaccination?
Yellow fever vaccine is a live attenuated vaccine, meaning it contains a weakened form of the virus. A single dose produces protective immunity in the great majority of people within 10 days, and since 2016 the World Health Organization has recognised a single dose as conferring lifelong protection, with the certificate valid for the life of the holder. Boosters are no longer routinely required, though a small number of groups may be advised to have one.
The certificate is a formal document. It records the vaccine batch, the date, and the signature and stamp of the registered centre, and it becomes valid on the tenth day after vaccination. Border officials do check it. Keep it with your passport, and if you lose it, a registered centre can usually issue a replacement from its records.
On side effects. Most people get a sore arm, and some get mild flu like symptoms for a few days. Serious adverse events are rare but genuinely serious when they occur, which is why the contraindications in Module 8 are taken seriously rather than treated as a formality, and why a first dose over the age of 60 warrants a proper conversation about whether your itinerary really requires it.
On what the vaccine does not do. It protects against yellow fever only. The same mosquitoes in the same regions transmit dengue, Zika and chikungunya, none of which this vaccine covers, so bite avoidance still matters: repellent containing DEET, covered clothing at dawn and dusk, and a mosquito net where appropriate.
