Typhoid is a bacterial infection caught from contaminated food and water, causing prolonged high fever, severe headache, abdominal pain and, untreated, potentially serious complications. It is common across South Asia, and present in much of Africa, Southeast Asia and parts of Latin America.
A single injection gives around three years of protection and takes effect within about two weeks. It is one of the most frequently recommended travel vaccines because the risk regions are also among the most visited, particularly by travellers visiting friends and relatives, who statistically account for a large share of UK typhoid cases and who are least likely to seek pre-travel advice.
One thing to be straight about: the vaccine is not fully protective. It reduces your risk substantially but not to zero, so food and water precautions still matter. That is not a caveat we bury; it is the practical advice that goes with the injection.

Typhoid vs NHS GP: What's The Difference?

Typhoid vaccine is one of the few travel vaccines available free on the NHS at many GP practices, along with hepatitis A and diphtheria, tetanus and polio. If your practice can fit you in before you travel, use them. Private vaccination is worth paying for when you cannot get an appointment in time, need vaccines your practice does not stock, or want everything done in one visit.
