Chikungunya Vaccination
Chikungunya vaccination at £195, with suitability checked before we recommend it.
Spread by daytime biting mosquitoes across the tropics, and known for joint pain that can persist for months after the fever has gone. This is a newly licensed vaccine with age and health restrictions, so we check suitability carefully before recommending it.

Book Your Chikungunya Vaccination
Chikungunya is a viral infection spread by Aedes mosquitoes, the same daytime biting mosquitoes that carry dengue and Zika. It causes sudden high fever and severe joint pain, and the joint pain is what distinguishes it: in a substantial minority of people it persists for months or even years after the infection itself has resolved. That chronic arthritis is the real burden of the disease, and it is why a vaccine matters for a virus that rarely kills.
Vaccination against chikungunya became available only recently, and it is genuinely new medicine. Guidance is still developing, and regulators have adjusted their advice since first licensing, particularly regarding older adults. That is not a reason to avoid it; it is a reason to have suitability assessed by a doctor working from current guidance rather than to buy it off a list.
So this page does not promise you the vaccine. It offers an assessment: whether your destination and trip warrant it, whether you are within the licensed group, and whether anything in your health makes it unsuitable.
Why Patient Choose Our Chikungunya Vaccination Service
- Individual suitability assessment against current guidance for a new vaccine.
- Honest advice on whether your itinerary warrants it.
- Your age and medical history properly considered, which matters more here than for most travel vaccines.
- Full travel risk assessment, since chikungunya regions carry dengue and Zika too.
- Thorough bite avoidance advice, which protects against all three.
- Other vaccines in the same visit where clinically appropriate.
- Ten clinics across the UK.
- No NHS registration or referral required.

When to have Chikungunya Vaccination

- Staying for an extended period in a region with ongoing transmission.
- Travelling to affected parts of the Indian Ocean islands, South and Southeast Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, or Central and South America.
- Spending significant time outdoors in daytime in an affected area.

Bite avoidance, which protects against three Infections
- Aedes mosquitoes can transmit chikungunya, dengue and Zika.
- Dengue and Zika vaccines are generally unavailable to most UK travelers, making bite prevention essential.
- These mosquitoes bite during the day, particularly in the morning and late afternoon.
- Apply a repellent containing 50% DEET throughout the day, not only in the evening.
- Wear long-sleeved clothing and long trousers during the daytime where practical.
- Use permethrin-treated clothing during extended stays in affected areas.
- Choose accommodation with air conditioning and properly fitted window screens.
- Empty standing water from plant pots, buckets and gutters, and use a treated mosquito net when sleeping during the day.

What is Chikungunya Vaccination?
Chikungunya virus is spread by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Symptoms begin abruptly four to eight days after being bitten: high fever and severe joint pain typically affecting the hands, wrists, ankles, and feet symmetrically, often with a rash, headache, muscle pain and profound fatigue. The name derives from a Makonde word describing the stooped posture of people bent by joint pain.
The acute illness usually settles within one to two weeks, and death is rare. What makes chikungunya different is what happens next. A substantial minority of people, more commonly older adults and those with existing joint disease, develop persistent joint pain lasting months and sometimes years, resembling inflammatory arthritis. That chronic phase is the main burden of the disease and the main argument for vaccination.
Its geography has expanded considerably. Once confined to Africa and Asia, chikungunya reached the Americas in 2013 and has since caused large outbreaks across the Caribbean and Central and South America, and outbreaks have occurred in southern Europe. Aedes albopictus has established itself in parts of southern Europe, which is why the affected map is wider than it was and worth checking rather than assumed.
There is no specific treatment, only pain relief and supportive care. Diagnosis is by blood test, and it is often confused with dengue because the early symptoms overlap and the two circulate together.
On the vaccine. Chikungunya vaccination is a recent development, and the evidence base is younger than for the long-established travel vaccines. That is not a criticism; it is a reason for a clinician to apply current guidance to your particular circumstances.

Chikungunya Vaccination FAQs
£195.
No. There are age limits and medical contraindications, and the position for older adults has been reviewed by regulators since the vaccine was first licensed. This is why suitability is assessed individually.
The acute illness usually settles in one to two weeks, but joint pain persists for months or years in a substantial minority.
No specific treatment, only pain relief and supportive care.
Outbreaks have occurred in southern Europe since one of the carrying mosquitoes has established itself there.
If you develop fever and joint pain after travel to an affected area, seek medical assessment and mention where you have been. Fever after tropical travel also needs malaria to be excluded.
It depends on current outbreak activity at your destination, how long you are staying, and what you will be doing. We check current outbreak reporting at the appointment.
Sudden high fever and severe joint pain, usually in the hands, wrists, ankles, and feet, often with rash and fatigue.
Death is rare. Chronic joint pain is the main burden.
Both are spread by the same mosquitoes and the early symptoms overlap. Chikungunya causes more prominent and more persistent joint pain; dengue more bleeding risk. They are distinguished by blood test.
Yes, and it matters a lot because the same mosquitoes carry dengue and Zika, which this vaccine does not cover.
