Memory problems are not always dementia IN OXFORD
Several conditions cause memory and concentration problems and improve with treatment. Depression, an underactive thyroid, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, poor sleep, and the side effects of common medications all do it. So do infections in older people, and alcohol.
That is why the blood tests come before the diagnosis, not after. A meaningful number of people who come in worried about dementia have something else, and finding it changes the outcome entirely.
If it is dementia, an early and accurate diagnosis is still worth having. It opens access to treatment, to support, and to decisions that are far easier to make while capacity is intact.

A few things worth knowing before you call.
The person being assessed needs to agree to it. They must consent, and if they do not want to come, that is their decision. What often helps is framing it as ruling things out rather than confirming fears.
Come with them if you can. A second account of what has changed and when is one of the most valuable parts of the assessment, and people frequently minimise their own symptoms without meaning to.
Bring a list of every medication, including anything bought over the counter. Medication is a common and entirely reversible cause.
What happens after a diagnosis IN OXFORD
Medication. Where it is appropriate, we can prescribe on a short term private prescription basis. That is a bridge, not a long term arrangement. Dementia medication is usually initiated and monitored long term by NHS memory services, so the sustainable route is transfer of ongoing care to the NHS, and your report is written to support that.
Driving, and this matters. A diagnosis of dementia must be notified to the DVLA. It is a legal duty on the driver, not on us, and failing to do it can invalidate insurance. A diagnosis does not automatically mean losing a licence, and many people continue driving with review. We will tell you what you need to do.
Decisions while capacity is intact. An early diagnosis leaves a window in which someone can still make a Lasting Power of Attorney and set out their own wishes. That window closes. Nobody enjoys this conversation, and having it early is one of the most useful things a family can do.
