Private GP triage and screening.
An initial appointment to take the history, review your medications, and carry out screening cognitive tests.
Led by a consultant old age psychiatrist, using recognised cognitive testing, blood tests and imaging where it is needed. Memory problems are not always dementia, and the first job is to establish which you are dealing with. We are on Osborne Avenue in Jesmond, off Osborne Road, a short walk from Jesmond and West Jesmond Metro.
Several conditions cause memory and concentration problems and improve with treatment. Depression, an underactive thyroid, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, poor sleep, and the side effects of common medications all do it. So do infections in older people, and alcohol.
That is why the blood tests come before the diagnosis, not after. A meaningful number of people who come in worried about dementia have something else, and finding it changes the outcome entirely.
If it is dementia, an early and accurate diagnosis is still worth having. It opens access to treatment, to support, and to decisions that are far easier to make while capacity is intact.

Looking specifically for the treatable causes above. Included in the fee. A referral letter for a CT or MRI scan is provided where imaging is needed.

including medication where it is appropriate.
Most people who arrange this are not the patient. Usually it is an adult son or daughter who has noticed something and does not know what to do next.
A few things worth knowing before you call.
The person being assessed needs to agree to it. They must consent, and if they do not want to come, that is their decision. What often helps is framing it as ruling things out rather than confirming fears.
Come with them if you can. A second account of what has changed and when is one of the most valuable parts of the assessment, and people frequently minimise their own symptoms without meaning to.
Bring a list of every medication, including anything bought over the counter. Medication is a common and entirely reversible cause.

Medication. Where it is appropriate, we can prescribe on a short term private prescription basis. That is a bridge, not a long term arrangement. Dementia medication is usually initiated and monitored long term by NHS memory services, so the sustainable route is transfer of ongoing care to the NHS, and your report is written to support that.
Driving, and this matters. A diagnosis of dementia must be notified to the DVLA. It is a legal duty on the driver, not on us, and failing to do it can invalidate insurance. A diagnosis does not automatically mean losing a licence, and many people continue driving with review. We will tell you what you need to do.
Decisions while capacity is intact. An early diagnosis leaves a window in which someone can still make a Lasting Power of Attorney and set out their own wishes. That window closes. Nobody enjoys this conversation, and having it early is one of the most useful things a family can do.
No referral needed.

£1,295 for the complete process, covering triage, cognitive testing, blood tests, the psychiatrist assessment, and a written plan. A CT or MRI scan, if needed, is paid separately to the radiology centre.
No. Depression, thyroid problems, B12 or folate deficiency, poor sleep, and medication side effects all cause memory problems and all improve with treatment. The blood tests look for exactly these, which is why they come before the diagnosis.
They need to agree to the assessment. Come with them if you can, bring a full medication list, and write down specific examples of what has changed and when. Your account is one of the most valuable parts of the assessment.
A dementia diagnosis must be reported to the DVLA. That is a legal duty on the driver, and not reporting it can invalidate insurance. It does not automatically mean losing a licence. We will explain what you need to do.
If a diagnosis is made early, there is a window in which someone can still make a Lasting Power of Attorney and record their own wishes. That window closes. It is worth doing sooner than feels necessary.

Same- or next-day appointments are usually available, and no referral is needed.
The Addenbrooke’s Cognitive Examination, verbal and visual recall testing, and attention and processing speed measures, alongside blood tests and imaging where needed.
Please allow enough time for an unhurried appointment, typically around an hour to an hour and a half for the assessment itself, depending on your needs. Your specialist will not rush you, and any further steps, such as a scan or a follow-up review, are arranged separately.
Where appropriate, on a short-term private prescription. Long-term, dementia medication is usually managed by NHS memory services, and the report is written to support that transfer.
Yes. Your GP can refer you to an NHS memory service, and that is free. Waits vary by area. If the wait where you are is short, that is the better route, and we would rather tell you.
