Appointments Within Weeks
Rather than the multi year waits typical of NHS adult autism services.

A full adult assessment using recognised diagnostic tools, with a written report you can use for workplace or study adjustments. An assessment does not guarantee a diagnosis, and a thorough one sometimes concludes that something else fits better.
NHS autism assessment waits, particularly for adults, now run to several years in much of the country. For many adults the request for assessment follows decades of sensing a difference without a name for it, often after a child in the family has been diagnosed and the description felt familiar.
A private assessment gives you an answer in weeks. It involves a detailed developmental history from early childhood, structured diagnostic instruments, information from someone who knew you as a child where that is possible, and consideration of the things that look similar: ADHD, anxiety, trauma, and the effects of long term masking.
Being clear about what a diagnosis is and is not. It is not a label attached to difficulties you already knew about. For most people it is an explanatory framework: it makes sense of a life of exhausting compensation, it gives access to reasonable adjustments at work and in education, and it changes how you understand yourself. Many autistic adults describe it as a relief rather than a loss.
And what it is not: something to be treated or cured. Autism is a difference in how the brain processes information, communication and sensory input. There is no medication for it and it does not need one. What helps is understanding, adjustments, and support with any co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, which are common and are treatable.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference present from early childhood, affecting social communication, patterns of thought and behaviour, and sensory processing. Diagnosis is clinical: there is no blood test and no brain scan. Any provider offering one is selling something the evidence does not support.
A diagnostic assessment establishes whether the diagnostic criteria are met, drawing on your developmental history, current presentation, structured instruments, and information from someone who knew you as a child where possible. It also distinguishes autism from, and identifies alongside it, the conditions that overlap: ADHD, which co-occurs very frequently, anxiety disorders, trauma related presentations, and social communication differences with other causes.
What a diagnosis actually gives you:
What it does not give you: a treatment, because none is needed. Autism is not an illness. Support means adjustments, understanding and addressing co-occurring conditions, not intervention aimed at the autism itself.
One honest caveat about private diagnosis. Some local authorities, schools and NHS services accept private autism diagnoses for support purposes and some do not, and practice varies considerably. If your main reason for assessment is to secure educational support or an EHCP, ask the school or local authority what they will accept before you pay. We would rather you asked that question than spent £1,795 on a report that does not do what you needed it to do.
| Private Autism Assessment | NHS Autism Assessment | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | £1,495 adult, £1,795 children | Free at point of use |
| Typical Wait | Same day or within days | Days to weeks |
| Referral | Not needed | GP referral, then triage |
| Assessment team | Ask at your appointment | Usually multidisciplinary, per NICE |
| Structured instruments | Ask at your appointment | ADOS-2, ADI-R, DISCO and similar |
| School observation for children | Ask at your appointment | Usually included |
| Written report | Provided to you | Provided |
| Post diagnostic support | Ask at your appointment | Varies considerably by area |
Two honest points. NHS Right to Choose may apply to autism assessment in England and can substantially shorten the wait at no cost, and it is worth investigating before paying. And if educational support is your goal, check what your local authority accepts first.
£1,495 for adults, £1,795 For Children
No, you can self refer.
Practice varies, and some accept private diagnoses while others do not. If educational support is your aim, ask them before booking.
Many adults find the explanation itself valuable, and a diagnosis gives a legal basis for workplace adjustments. It is a personal decision and we will not push you either way.
Weeks rather than years.
Developmental history, structured questionnaires, a clinical diagnostic assessment, and information from someone who knew you in childhood where possible.
No, and none is needed. Autism is a difference, not an illness. Support means adjustments and understanding, plus treatment for any co-occurring conditions such as anxiety.
No. That reflects an outdated understanding. Many autistic people, particularly women, mask effectively for decades, and masking is a reason diagnoses are missed rather than evidence against autism.
