Who should consider AN ADHD ASSESSMENT
It Is About Impairment, Not Personality
Everybody is distractible sometimes, and that is not what this is. The question a psychiatrist is answering is whether these traits have been present since childhood, whether they show up in more than one setting, and whether they are actually getting in the way of your life.
In adults
- Difficulty sustaining attention on things that are not intrinsically interesting.
- Chronic disorganisation, missed deadlines, and lost items, despite genuine effort.
- Restlessness, an inability to settle, or a constant sense of internal motion.
- Impulsivity in decisions, spending, speech or relationships.
- Emotional dysregulation, with reactions that feel disproportionate afterwards.
- A pattern of underachievement relative to ability, going back years.
In children
- Difficulty following instructions or finishing tasks.
- Fidgeting, constant motion, or difficulty staying seated.
- Interrupting, blurting out, or difficulty waiting.
- Losing things and appearing not to listen.
- Difficulty in more than one setting, at school as well as at home.
Symptoms need to be present in more than one setting to be ADHD, which is why the assessment asks about school and work as well as home. One setting only usually points somewhere else, and that is worth finding out too.
Private assessment vs NHS: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?
Right to Choose is a legal right in England, and it lets you ask your GP to refer you to any provider with an NHS contract, rather than waiting for your local service. It is free and the waits are often far shorter than a standard referral. Not everyone is eligible, it does not apply in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, and not every provider has capacity, but you should ask your GP about it before you pay for a private assessment.
People still choose to pay, and the reasons are legitimate: a diagnosis in weeks rather than months, choosing your clinician, appointment times that fit around work, and continuity from screening through to prescribing. But you should make that choice knowing the alternative exists.
