What is Spirometry Test?
Spirometry measures the volume and speed of air you can breathe out. Two numbers matter most: FVC, the total volume you can force out after a full breath in, and FEV1, how much of that comes out in the first second. The ratio between them tells a clinician whether your airways are obstructed.
That ratio is what separates the two broad patterns. An obstructive pattern, where FEV1 falls disproportionately to FVC, points to narrowed airways as in asthma or COPD. A restrictive pattern, where both fall together, points to the lungs not expanding fully, which has quite different causes. Distinguishing them changes the whole direction of investigation, which is why the interpretation matters as much as the measurement.
Reversibility testing takes this further. The test is repeated after a bronchodilator, and if the obstruction substantially improves, that supports asthma, where the narrowing is reversible. If it does not, that points more toward COPD.
One caveat worth stating plainly: spirometry is effort dependent. If you do not blow as hard or as long as you can, the numbers understate your lung function, which is precisely why the operator coaches you and why the test is repeated until readings are consistent. A poorly performed spirometry is worse than no spirometry, because it produces a number that looks authoritative and is wrong.
