Semaglutide is a prescription only medicine given as a weekly injection. It is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, mimicking a gut hormone released after eating, which slows stomach emptying and acts on appetite regulation in the brain. The product licensed for weight management is prescribed for people meeting specific clinical criteria.
It is not available on request and it is not a cosmetic product. Whether it is appropriate depends on your BMI, your other conditions, your medication and your history. That is a clinical judgement made in a consultation, and a meaningful proportion of people who ask for it should not have it. Where treatment is appropriate, it starts at a low dose and increases in steps over months, with monitoring. Side effects are common, mostly gastrointestinal, and mostly worst early and after each dose increase. Serious risks are uncommon but real, and Module 8 and Module 13 set them out rather than burying them.
And the thing to understand before starting: appetite generally returns when treatment stops, and weight regain is common. This is not a short course.
