Book An Appointment

Our Edgbaston clinic AND SURGICAL THEATRE

Your procedure takes place in our own minor operations theatre, not in a consulting room with the lights turned up. It is at 88 Hagley Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham B16 8LU, and it is the surgical site for the whole Private Medical Clinic network.

A surgical nurse is with you from the moment you come through to theatre until you leave, which counts for more than it sounds when you are awake for your own operation. Everything is under local anaesthetic as a day case, so there is no general anaesthetic, no overnight stay, and you are home the same day.

I am your SURGEON

Am I suitable, and WHAT CHANGE IS REALISTIC?

Decided at the Assessment, Not on the Phone

Prominent ears are a matter of cartilage shape, not size. Usually the fold at the top of the ear never formed properly, or the bowl of the ear is deep, or both. Otoplasty reshapes that cartilage so the ear sits closer to the head and the fold looks natural from the front.

Good candidates are adults who are bothered by it, in reasonable health, and clear about what they want changed. The aim is ears that stop drawing attention, not ears that match to the millimetre. Perfect symmetry is not achievable, because no two ears start symmetrical, and a surgeon who promises it is overselling.

Adults aged 18 and over here. Children are often operated on younger elsewhere, and if that is what you are looking for we will point you to the right service rather than take the booking. A 14-day cooling-off period applies.

How OTOPLASTY WORKS

Step by Step, With Nothing Glossed Over

The incision sits behind the ear, in the crease where it meets the head, so the scar is hidden. The cartilage is reshaped with permanent sutures to recreate the fold that is missing, and where the bowl of the ear is deep, a small amount of cartilage may be removed.

Both ears are almost always done together, because the point of the operation is how the pair looks from the front. It takes about ninety minutes under local anaesthetic, with you awake and the ears numb.

A head dressing goes on at the end and stays for a short period, then a lighter headband at night for several weeks to protect the new shape while it settles.

Realistic results AND THE RECOVERY TIMELINE

  1. Stage 1

    SAME DAY

Home the same day in a head dressing. Someone else drives.

  2. Stage 2

    DAYS 1 TO 7

Head dressing in place. Aching rather than sharp pain. Sleep on your back.

  3. Stage 3

    WEEK 1 TO 2

Dressing changed to a night headband. Ears look swollen and sit very flat.

  4. Stage 4

    WEEKS 2 TO 6

Back to work and normal routine. Night headband continues. No contact sport.

  5. Stage 5

    WEEKS 6 TO 12

Swelling settled, shape looking natural, scar behind the ear fading.

  6. Stage 6

    MONTHS 6 TO 12

Final shape. The correction is permanent in the great majority of cases.

Otoplasty BEFORE AND AFTER RESULTS

Before and after photographs are the most persuasive thing on a surgery page, which is exactly why they have to be handled properly. Every image here is a real patient of this clinic who has given documented written consent, and the results shown are typical rather than the best we have ever achieved.
