Our Edgbaston clinic AND SURGICAL THEATRE
Your procedure takes place in our own minor operations theatre, not in a consulting room with the lights turned up. It is at 88 Hagley Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham B16 8LU, and it is the surgical site for the whole Private Medical Clinic network.
A surgical nurse is with you from the moment you come through to theatre until you leave, which counts for more than it sounds when you are awake for your own operation. Everything is under local anaesthetic as a day case, so there is no general anaesthetic, no overnight stay, and you are home the same day.

Mr. Samuel George completed his plastic surgical training at the Northwest Deanery in 2019, after graduating from the University of Aberdeen in 2008. Samuel is a prominent surgical educator in the United Kingdom and a member of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH).
Am I suitable, and HOW MANY GRAFTS WILL I NEED?
Most moles are harmless, and most people who come in leave reassured. That is not the same as a mole being nothing to think about. Suitability for removal is decided at the assessment, not on the phone, because the answer depends on what the mole looks like under magnification.
If the mole is plainly benign, it can be removed at a second appointment, for appearance or for peace of mind. If anything about it needs closer attention, we say so, and it is investigated rather than tidied away. We will not remove a mole that should be looked into as though it were a cosmetic blemish.
Whether it is sent for histology is a clinical decision made on the day. Where there is any doubt at all, it goes to the laboratory, and that is included in the price rather than charged as an extra. Adults aged 18 and over.
HOW SURGICAL MOLE REMOVAL WORKS
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you are awake and the skin is completely numb. The whole mole is excised, not shaved or burned, and the skin is closed with fine sutures where the site needs them.
Removing it intact is the point. It is what allows a laboratory to examine all of it, which is the only way to be certain what it was. A fragment tells you much less, and a destroyed mole tells you nothing at all. This is why we do not laser or shave off pigmented moles, and why we would be wary of anyone who does.
Where histology is required, the sample goes to Nationwide Pathology, an accredited laboratory, and we share the result as soon as it is back.

Nobody can tell for certain by looking, and that is exactly the point. Dermoscopy identifies the features that raise concern, but the definitive answer comes from a laboratory examining the whole mole. That is why we excise intact and test whenever there is any doubt.
A properly excised mole should not regrow. Pigment returning at the site is a reason to be seen again, and it is more common after shave or laser removal, where cells are left behind, which is another reason we excise fully.
Mole removal here starts from £795, including histology where it is required, and the consultation and dermatology assessment is £195. Your exact price depends on the size of the mole and where it sits, and is confirmed in writing after your assessment.
The local anaesthetic injection stings briefly, then the area is completely numb, and you feel pressure rather than pain. Afterwards, it is mildly sore for a day or two, and paracetamol is enough.
Keep the dressing dry, avoid heavy exercise while the wound heals, do not pick the site, and keep it out of the sun for the first year because new scars pigment easily.
No, and we would strongly advise against them. They scar badly, frequently leave pigment cells behind, and destroy the tissue that would have shown whether the mole mattered. They are the single worst way to deal with a mole.
The NHS removes moles that are clinically suspicious, promptly and for free. It does not routinely remove moles for appearance. If yours is suspicious, we will say so and make sure it gets on the right pathway, whether or not you go ahead here.
Mole removal here is for adults aged 18 and over. A child with a changing mole should still be seen, and we will point you to the right service.
Yes. Any removal that cuts the skin leaves some mark, and how noticeable it is depends on the site and on how carefully the wound is closed. That is the argument for surgical excision by a plastic surgeon rather than a quick shave.
The wound closes within one to two weeks, and sutures come out around day seven to fourteen. The scar stays red and firm for several weeks, then softens and pales over three to twelve months.
