Hepatitis B is a viral liver infection spread through blood and body fluids. Unlike hepatitis A, it can become a long term infection, and long term infection is what causes liver damage over decades. The vaccine prevents it, and it is one of the most effective vaccines in use.

People need it for three broad reasons. Travel, particularly longer stays, remote destinations, or anywhere you might need medical or dental treatment locally. Work, since healthcare, dental, laboratory, care and emergency service roles all involve potential blood exposure and employers generally require it. And personal risk, including people with a partner or household member who has hepatitis B.

The standard course is three doses over six months, which is fine if you have time. If you do not, accelerated schedules can compress the course substantially, and that is worth asking about rather than assuming you have missed the window.
