If the exposure was in the last 72 hours, read this first

A test is not what you need yet. If you have had a high risk exposure within the last 72 hours, the time critical action is post exposure prophylaxis, known as PEP, which is a course of medication that can prevent HIV taking hold. It works best the sooner it is started and it is not useful after 72 hours. PEP is available free on the NHS. Go to an NHS sexual health service, or to an emergency department outside their hours, and say you need PEP. Do not wait for a test result, and do not wait for an appointment with us.

SAME DAY HIV TESTING IN CAMBRIDGE

    When the test becomes reliable

28 days after the exposure. Before that a negative result cannot be relied on, because the test looks for your body’s response and that takes time to appear. Testing at a week is the commonest mistake people make, and a negative then means very little.

    Booking in Cambridge

Same day appointments are usually available, and no referral is needed. You do not have to be registered with a local NHS practice or live locally.

    Getting your results

Next day. Someone talks you through them rather than emailing a figure.

What the HIV test looks for IN CAMBRIDGE

    • The test we use detects HIV antibodies and the p24 antigen. The antigen appears earlier than antibodies, which is why a combined test becomes reliable sooner than an antibody only test would.
    • What a negative result at 28 days means. It is a reliable negative for that exposure. If you have had a further risk since, that starts a new window.
    • What a positive result means now. Modern HIV treatment is a tablet, usually once a day. People diagnosed and treated promptly have a normal life expectancy and become untransmittable to partners. A positive result today is a manageable long term condition, not what it was thirty years ago, and we will say so and arrange specialist care the same week.

      What is Private GP

      Confidential HIV testing IN CAMBRIDGE

      • On being seen. Toft Road, Bourn is a general medical location, not a signed sexual health service. Nobody in the waiting area knows why anyone else is there.
      • On your records. They stay with us. Nothing is passed to your NHS GP unless you specifically ask us to.
      • On insurance and employment. A private HIV test is not reportable to anyone. If you are worried about disclosure on an insurance application, that is worth asking about before you test rather than afterwards.
