Book a chlamydia testing appointment Without The Wait

Chlamydia is the most commonly diagnosed sexually transmitted infection in the UK, and most people who have it have no symptoms at all. That is the whole reason testing matters: you cannot tell from how you feel, and untreated chlamydia can affect fertility.

The test itself is simple. A urine sample for men, or a self taken vaginal swab for women, which most people find easier and less invasive than expected. Results come back the next day. If it is positive, treatment is a short course of antibiotics and the infection clears, and we can prescribe the same day. If it is negative, you have your answer without a fortnight of waiting.

When to TEST FOR CHLAMYDIA

The Testing Window

Chlamydia is usually detectable around two weeks after exposure. Testing sooner can miss an early infection, so if it has been only a few days, we may recommend testing now and repeating it.

Same Day Appointments

Same day slots are usually available across all ten clinics.

Evening and Weekend Appointments

Clinics are open Monday to Friday 8am to 7pm, and Saturday mornings. [Confirm exact Saturday closing time per clinic, the live site is inconsistent.]

Should you TEST FOR CHLAMYDIA?

  • Worth testing if any of these apply:
  • You have had unprotected sex with a new partner.
  • A condom failed.
  • A partner has told you they have tested positive.
  • You are under 25 and sexually active. Annual testing is recommended for this group because rates are highest.
  • You have a new partner and want to start clear.
  • You are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.
  • You have symptoms: unusual discharge, pain passing urine, bleeding between periods or after sex, pelvic pain, or testicular pain.
  • You have never been tested.

What is Chlamydia Testing?

Chlamydia is an infection caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, passed on through unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex, and through sharing sex toys. It is the most commonly diagnosed STI in the UK.

The important thing about it is how quiet it is. Around seven in ten women and half of men with chlamydia have no symptoms whatsoever, which means it spreads through people who have no reason to suspect anything. Where symptoms do occur they are easy to dismiss: slightly unusual discharge, mild discomfort passing urine, spotting between periods, or a dull ache.

Left untreated it can ascend. In women it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which is a significant cause of tubal damage, ectopic pregnancy and infertility. In men it can cause epididymo-orchitis, a painful inflammation of the testicles. Both are avoidable, and the treatment is a short antibiotic course.

Testing uses a NAAT, a nucleic acid amplification test, which looks for the bacterium’s genetic material and is highly accurate. For men that is a urine sample, for women a self taken vaginal swab, which detects more infections than a urine sample does in women. Throat or rectal swabs are used where relevant to your sexual history, and it is worth mentioning that when you book, because a genital sample alone will not detect an infection at another site.

Chlamydia Testing vs NHS GP: What's The Difference?

An NHS GP is free at the point of use but often has longer waits and shorter appointments. A private GP is paid for directly, usually seen the same day or within days, with longer consultations and greater continuity. You can use both, and seeing a private GP does not affect your NHS care.
