WHICH MENINGITIS C VACCINE YOU WILL BE GIVEN
Worth two minutes, because the naming in this area confuses almost everybody.
Meningitis C is one of five main groups of meningococcal bacteria, the others being A, B, W and Y. Group C used to be a common cause of meningitis in the UK, and vaccination made it rare.
The vaccine we give protects against four of those groups: A, C, W and Y. It is given as either Nimenrix or Menveo. So if you have come here for meningitis C protection, that is exactly what this vaccine provides, and it covers three further groups as well.
Why the four-in-one vaccine is used now. Group C disease became uncommon after vaccination, while group W cases rose, so protection across all four groups became the sensible approach. You are not being given something different from what you asked for. You are being given more.
Meningitis B is a separate vaccine. This one does not cover group B, and group B is the commonest cause of meningococcal disease in young children in the UK.
Infants are given a combined Hib and meningitis C vaccine, Menitorix, at around twelve months as part of the routine childhood schedule.

- Teenagers are offered the meningitis ACWY vaccine through the school programme.
- First time university students under 25 who missed it at school can still get it free from a GP practice. If that is you, use it.
- Infants get the combined Hib and meningitis C vaccine as part of the routine childhood schedule.
- People come to us because they fall outside those groups, because they cannot get an appointment before term starts or before they fly, because they need a certificate quickly for a visa, or because they want it done today. All of those are good reasons.
- Paying £75 for something you were entitled to free is not. Ask your practice first if your timescale allows it.
MENINGITIS VACCINATION FOR UNIVERSITY AND FOR HAJJ
Going to university
Meningitis vaccination is the one that matters most before the first term, and the risk is concentrated in the first few weeks of living in halls.
Worth checking at the same time. Whether you are up to date on MMR, because measles outbreaks in student populations are a recurring problem, and whether the rest of your childhood schedule is complete.
Going for Hajj or Umrah
Saudi Arabia requires proof of meningitis ACWY vaccination for the visa. The certificate has a validity window and a minimum number of days before travel, so leave time rather than booking the week you fly.
Bring your visa paperwork to the appointment so the certificate is issued in the form your application needs.
Other vaccinations are often recommended for the same trip, and we can advise on those in the same appointment.
