Book a blood group test appointment WITHOUT THE WAIT

Before You Book, Here Are the Free Ways to Find Out

We would rather tell you this up front than have you discover it afterwards. There are several ways to learn your blood group without paying us £195:

  • Donate blood. NHS Blood and Transplant tells you your blood group after your first donation, free, and you have done something genuinely useful. This is the best option for most people.
  • If you are pregnant, your blood group and rhesus status are tested as a routine part of NHS antenatal care, free.
  • If you have ever had surgery, a transfusion, or been pregnant, your blood group may already be in your medical records. Ask your GP practice.

So who is this test genuinely for? People who want to know now and cannot wait or cannot donate; people who need it documented for a specific purpose such as travel, a visa or an employer; people with a medical condition where they want it on hand; and people who simply want to know and would rather pay than wait. All perfectly reasonable, and none of them requires us to pretend the test is medically urgent.

Results come back in 24 to 48 hours with a written record.

    Why people WANT TO KNOW

    Genuine reasons:

    • Documentation for travel, a visa or an employer. Some countries and some employers, particularly for offshore, maritime, aviation and remote work, require a documented blood group. [Confirm whether the clinic issues a formal certificate suitable for these purposes, since that is a real use case and a formal document may be needed rather than a lab report.]
    • Before travelling somewhere remote, where knowing your group is one less unknown.
    • Pregnancy planning, particularly rhesus status, which matters. Though NHS antenatal care tests are free.
    • A family member needs a transplant or transfusion and you are considering donating.
    • Curiosity, or completing your own health records. A perfectly valid reason, and we will not pretend otherwise.
    • A medical condition for which you want the information on hand.
    • Considering blood donation and wanting to know beforehand.

One thing worth being clear about. In a genuine emergency, hospitals do not rely on a card in your wallet. Blood is cross-matched on the spot before transfusion because using a self-reported group would be unsafe. So carrying your blood group does not change your emergency care, and any provider implying that it might is overstating. Knowing it is useful and reassuring; it is not life-saving.

And on blood type diets and personality claims, there is no credible evidence for either. If you have seen those claims, they are not a reason to test.

    Blood group test FAQs
