Tirzepatide is a prescription only medicine given as a weekly injection. It acts on two gut hormone receptors, GLP-1 and GIP, which reduce appetite and slow stomach emptying. It is licensed for weight management in people meeting specific clinical criteria, and separately for type 2 diabetes.

Side effects and WHAT TO EXPECT
- Nausea and reduced appetite: These are common, especially during the first few weeks and after a dose increase.
- Digestive symptoms: Diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, indigestion, reflux, burping and abdominal discomfort may occur.
- Other common effects: Some people experience fatigue or mild redness, swelling or discomfort around the injection site.
- Managing common side effects: Symptoms usually improve as the body adjusts. Eating smaller portions, avoiding fatty or rich foods, drinking enough fluids and increasing the dose gradually may help.
- Severe abdominal symptoms: Stop treatment and seek urgent medical assessment for severe, persistent abdominal pain—particularly pain spreading to the back—as this may indicate pancreatitis. Upper abdominal pain with fever or jaundice may suggest a gallbladder problem.
- Other symptoms requiring medical help: Seek prompt advice for persistent vomiting, dehydration, vision changes or low blood sugar—particularly if using insulin or a sulfonylurea. Call 999 for breathing difficulties, facial or throat swelling, or another severe allergic reaction.
- Thyroid and muscle considerations: These medicines may be unsuitable for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2. Because rapid weight loss can reduce muscle as well as fat, adequate protein and regular resistance exercise are important.
- Use only regulated medicines: Obtain treatment with a valid prescription from a registered pharmacy. Never buy GLP-1 medicines through social media or unregulated sellers, as counterfeit products may contain incorrect doses, harmful ingredients or even insulin.
