A private specialist referral is a letter from a GMC registered doctor confirming that you need to be seen by a consultant in a particular specialty, and setting out why. It includes your history, your examination findings and any relevant test results, so the specialist starts with the full picture rather than from scratch.
You do not need an NHS referral to see a private specialist in most cases, but most private hospitals and almost all health insurers want one, because it demonstrates that a doctor has assessed you and agrees the specialist opinion is warranted. If you are claiming on insurance, check what your policy requires before you book, since some insurers only accept referrals made in a particular format.
