Being straightforward first: for most people, a supermarket urine test is the right answer. They cost a pound or two, they are over 99 per cent accurate from the day your period is due, and paying £120 for the same information makes no sense. We would rather tell you that than take the money.

When to be seen, and WHEN IT IS URGENT
Seek Urgent Care If
Pain on one side of your lower abdomen, shoulder tip pain, bleeding, dizziness or faintness in early pregnancy can indicate an ectopic pregnancy, which is a medical emergency. Do not wait for a blood test result. Go to A and E or contact an early pregnancy unit the same day. Ectopic pregnancy is treatable and it is dangerous if missed.
Timing
HCG is detectable in blood from roughly 8 to 11 days after conception, earlier than in urine. Testing too early can give a negative result in a pregnancy that is developing normally, so a repeat may be advised.

What an HCG blood test TELLS YOU
Human chorionic gonadotropin, HCG, is produced by the developing placenta from very early in pregnancy. Both urine and blood tests detect it, and the difference is what they report.
- A urine test is qualitative: it shows a line or it does not, above a threshold. It is over 99 per cent accurate from the day your period is due, and it is cheap and immediate.
- A blood test is quantitative: it gives a measured level. That has two advantages. It becomes positive earlier, from roughly 8 to 11 days after conception. And because it is a number, it can be repeated and compared, which is where the real clinical value lies.
- Why the trend matters more than any single number. In a normally developing early pregnancy, HCG roughly doubles every 48 to 72 hours. A level that is rising appropriately is reassuring. A level rising too slowly, plateauing, or falling raises concern about an ectopic pregnancy or a miscarriage. That pattern over two tests is far more informative than one result, which is why serial testing is the standard approach where there is a worry.
Important limits, stated plainly:
- A single HCG level cannot date a pregnancy accurately. The range at any given week is very wide. Ultrasound dates a pregnancy; blood tests do not.
- A single level cannot tell you whether a pregnancy is in the right place. Only a scan can do that. Ectopic pregnancy can occur with a normal-looking HCG.
- A single level cannot tell you a pregnancy is healthy. It tells you HCG is present at a certain concentration.
- A very early negative does not exclude pregnancy. If you test before implantation is established, repeat in a few days.
What to do with a positive result. If you are continuing the pregnancy, contact your GP or self-refer to maternity services to start antenatal care, which includes a dating scan, blood group and Rhesus testing, and screening. NHS antenatal care is comprehensive and free, and it is the right place for pregnancy care. If you are not sure what you want to do, that is entirely valid, and you are entitled to non-directive information and time to decide.
